The Beaver Valley, with spectacular natural scenery and a friendly climate, is
situated in the southern part of the West Kootenay, just north of the
Columbia River, between the cities of Trail and Salmo. Two communities are
located in the Valley: Montrose with a population of around 1,100 people and
Fruitvale with about two thousand. People in both communities enjoy rural living and
celebrate nature and gardening. Once a year they open up their gardens for
all to see and admire.

Established, 28 years old, beautiful garden in the center of Fruitvale.
The overall design of the garden is very
delicate, there is a lot of shade, most of the flowers are in pastel colours.
Japanese style panels made by the owner
of the garden create intriguing "rooms" and are
a great background for the variety of shrubs and perennials.

Wonderful plants of Clematis adorn the front of the house of Diana and Dallas
Fletcher, also in Fruitvale, giving the feeling of coolness and shade.
There is also a vegetable garden and more
ornamental shrubs, perennials and annuals at the back of the house. |

In this three years young garden in Beavervale the
sunny slope facing the house has been transformed into a series of
terraces filled with annuals, perennials and shrubs chosen for their fragrance.
Shady areas on the North side of the house are home
to several varieties of Hostas and other shade loving plants.
There is also a organic vegetable garden with healthy Green Peas, Cabbages,
Tomatoes, Corn and much more.
The gardens blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. |

Ten years old garden of Rick and Heather Johnston in Fruitvale.
Thick carpet-like lawn enclosed by a border filled
with shrubs and perennials, some very unusual, like Kalmia latifolia, a close relative of Azalea,
on the upper-left photo, or Cherry Balm Barberry on the upper-right.
The path on the lower-right photo leads to a delightful little beach on the bank
of the Beaver Creek seen on the lower-left.
A lot of open space and the most beautiful lawn I have ever seen, almost unreal.
Rick fertilizes it once a year in spring and waters his lawn during the summer for
20 min every second day. |
